If you enjoy watching those amazing sea-life documentaries on TV you’ll love this workshop!
And if you also enjoy having a go at drawing and painting but would like to know how to make it all look better (or are just too scared to even start) then this class is designed just for you! We’ll be using watercolour to create some simple yet stunning paintings of sea horses and puffins.
Last year I had the honour of designing 18 huge flags to be used on the promenade in Penzance, and the theme I chose was the sea life right here in Mount’s Bay. This year I was commissioned to design two large lampshade featuring seaweed, fish and starfish underwater, and I’ll bring them along to the workshop for you to see… I love the fascinating, mysterious world of creatures that live on or under water, and I want to show you how you can paint your own magical images of sea creatures, too.
When you come to my workshop you’ll learn so many things:
How to follow a simple method of sketching to create preliminary drawings which look believable, in proportion and three dimensional
Create more colour impact in your watercolours (no more wishy washy or muddy colours)
Create “splash and splatter” effects to give movement, and create “resists” to create textural effects
Understand and use three basic watercolour techniques: “Wet in Wet,”
Know how much (or how little) water to add to your paint
Choose the best watercolour materials to make your painting easier
What will I do in the workshop?
In the morning session, you’ll learn how to draw seahorses and puffins, starting by combining simple shapes like circles, triangles, rectangles and curves to form the rough basic proportions of your creature. But don’t worry, I’m with you every step of the way, giving lots of step-by-step demonstrations and helpful explanatory handouts. Next, you’ll learn how to refine the shapes to create a more accurate drawing. You’ll also learn a clever way to reproduce your own drawing on to watercolour paper, ready to paint.
In the afternoon class we’ll have a little session on how to mix beautiful paint colours, create colour swatches, and paint the seahorse.
In the final session we’ll experiment with different dilutions of watercolour paint, both thick and thin, to create an exciting, high contrast painting of a Puffin including how to apply distinctive watercolour splatter and splash where you actually want it to go!
“Sarah is a wonderful teacher – she does lots of demonstrating and guides you through all the basics of watercolour painting, so that you feel confident that you can actually paint … with paints … on proper paper … with a brush … and know what you’re doing! ”
