This gentle, beginner-friendly workshop is designed especially for adults who want to start sketching again (or for the very first time!). You’ll learn how to keep things simple, loosen up your lines, and create expressive, beautiful sketches using just a biro and a few Inktense watercolour pencils — no paint, no fuss, just creativity. 

Sarah will be sharing her signature sketching techniques that she'll be exclusively showcasing in a series of articles for Leisure Painter from October 2025.

SHORELINE TREASURES WORKSHOP

A 1-Day Studio-Based Watercolour Experience

Imagine spending one creative, calming day in a beautiful Cornish workshop space, surrounded by collected treasures from the sea — pebbles, shells, seaweed, driftwood and more. We’ll begin by gently observing these natural objects, tuning into their colours, textures, and tiny details — before gradually exploring them through a series of relaxed, guided sketching and painting exercises.

This is how my Shoreline Treasures workshop begins — and you’ll love being introduced to the way an artist looks and sees, all from the comfort of our peaceful studio space.

No beach walking needed — everything we need will be in the studio for you to enjoy at your own pace. You’ll still get all the inspiration of the Cornish coast, just without needing to head outdoors.

How to paint a simple watercolour landscape…

In our tiny group of just six students in my beautiful artist’s studio I’ll be showing you how to use a classic watercolour sketchers’ box of paints to produce some simple, beautiful starter landscapes. All your art materials are included.

This is a gentle introduction to colour mixing, watercolour brushes and papers, and how to and use the classic “wet in wet”, and “glazing” techniques. I’ll be

demonstrating painting techniques and the sequence of creating a landscape painting: what you do first, next, and last. We’ll look at how to simplify things, how to paint a simple trouble free sky, distant hills and flower meadows. I’ll also be sharing lots of the easy solutions I’ve found to watercolour problems as a professional painter and illustrator with more than 30 years’ experience.

How to paint a simple watercolour seascape…

Come and spend a calming, inspiring day learning how to paint a simple starter seascape with me in a tiny group of just six students in my beautiful artist’s studio. I’ll be showing you how to use a classic watercolour sketchers’ box of paints to produce some simple, beautiful semi-abstract seascapes.

This is a gentle introduction to choosing the perfect colours for the different moods of the sea and sky, watercolour brushes, different ways of keeping the white of the paper fresh  and how to use the classic “wet in wet”, and “glazing” techniques. I’ll be demonstrating painting techniques and the sequence of creating a seascape painting: what you do first, next, and last. We’ll look at how to simplify things, how to paint a simple trouble-free sky, or a sunset, waves, reflections and sand.

 I’ll also be sharing lots of the easy solutions I’ve found to watercolour problems as a professional painter and illustrator with more than 30 years’ experience.

Watercolour Experience Days are designed to get you painting quickly and easily, and for you to have fun doing it. Perfect whether you’re an Absolute Beginner or if you paint already.

You’ll officially be a Watercolour Mixologist by the end of the day!

What you’ll do:

First thing: coffee and introductions to meet the other members of our group, then we’ll get started on our inspiring day. With my guidance you’ll create a beautiful colour chart in the morning and experiment with different ways to use your watercolour.

After lunch you’ll create some beautiful and easy abstract watercolour paintings using your new knowledge about colour and wet in wet technique.  

Ten things you’ll learn:

• How to create beautiful, juicy colours from the hard blocks (pans) in your watercolour box 

• How to easily create many more colours by mixing the ones you already have

• How to avoid mixing sludgy, muddy colours straight away

• My recommendations for the essential art materials for easy watercolours

•  how to create the perfect consistency for your watercolours

• Special colour combinations to make your colours sing (an artist’s secret!)

• How to create beautiful pools of colour to paint both watercolour washes and Wet-in-Wet technique

The thing is, once I have paints and a brush in front of me my brain cools down and soon I’m back in Happy Four- Year Old Land.  

Now, we all know that art works wonders in creating a sense of calm and happiness.

So come and play with me in my art studio: you don’t need any drawing or painting skills at all. We’ll just play with paint, experiment with water, mess about in the sand pit, (joke) and relax into a Watercolour Day of Play….

Nice music, hot tea and proper coffee on tap, all the art materials you can wish for, and gentle guidance for fun things to do with pencil and paint. We’ll do abstract-y type things, (so they don’t need to “look right”,) play with colours and wet in wet, print and stencil with paint, and you’ll be so relaxed when you leave you’ll be almost levitating…

I’ll be running a day of Watercolour for Wellbeing on the last Friday each month, and we’ll do slightly different things each time, so you may want to make a habit of it…
