Imagine this: you’re on holiday in Cornwall (or Greece, Spain: anywhere with a seacoast or a lake) and you’re looking at some rowing boats bobbing up and down and at their sparkling reflections in the water. You’d LOVE to sketch or paint them but haven’t a clue where to start.
Over the years I’ve learned what the most important elements of sketching boats are, and simple tricks to make it so much easier than you’d think. Let me show you how easy and enjoyable it can be!
I’ll share some boat drawing tips with you in the studio and then we’ll stroll down to the harbour at Penzance to try some sketching. Back in the studio, I’ll do demonstration for you on how to paint a boat and its reflections in watercolour, and then step by step, we’ll go through painting it together.

How to simplify the shapes of boats in five easy steps
How to tackle boats from different angles
How to add light and shadow to your sketch to make the boat look three dimensional
How reflections in water work and how to simplify them
How to achieve the accurate proportions and a foolproof way of checking them
How to use Inktense watercolour pencils and mix them to create new colours to match your subject matter
You’ll create some lovely sketches and mini watercolours of boats in this workshop, and with all the demonstrations, explanations, and your questions answered you’ll leave this workshop feeling so much more relaxed and confident to attempt your own experiment with sketching and painting boats at home or on your next holiday.
